The Time for a Convention Center in the Meadowlands is NOW
The vision of replacing the shuttered Arena with a multi-use convention center to complement the existing venues of MetLife Stadium, Meadowlands Racetrack and American Dream will reestablish the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex as a world leader. It also becomes the engine powering the regional economy for the next 30 years – just like the complex did when Sonny Werblin brought that vision to N.J. Governor Cahil and then N.J. Governor Brenden Byrne.
The task seemed daunting back then, but those visionaries believed in the prospects of bringing big-time sports and entertainment to New Jersey and the need for an economic engine to fuel our region’s growth. The Big M was the world leader in harness racing, the N.Y. Giants came to N.J., the N.Y. Jets soon followed, and the complex succeeded at bringing world-class sports and entertainment here with The Nets and Devils rounding out professional sports showcased at the complex. We had it all!
Then over the years we allowed the complex to slowly fade. So YES! The time is RIGHT NOW to use the compelling economic data to engage public officials on how to advance this vision to a reality and restart the economic engine:
- $30 Billion over 30 years for a $1.5 billion investment says it’s time to take this seriously.
- The convention center facility spurs a transformative level of private investment in the entire region.
- N.J. will build an even better brand by attracting visitors and making the Meadowlands a primary destination.
- The convention center is the missing link that compliments all existing assets at the complex.
